9 STEPS TO ACHIEVE COMPLIANCE

1. What substances do we have?

Create a list of products.
2. Where do we get them from?
List supplier (name, address) against products.

3. What do the products contain?
Request a Material Safety Data Sheet for each product from the relevant supplier who must, by law, supply relevant Health and Safety information.

4. What do I do with the information?
Enter relevant details on a substance assessment sheet.

5. Where do we use the product?
List each product against the department or area in which it is used. (Note: this may not be necessary in smaller companies).

6. How do I satisfy myself that the product does not represent unacceptable risk?
Examine the conditions of storage, transportation (in-house), usage and process and identify who may be at risk. Carry out a Risk Assessment and record findings. Improve control measures where necessary.

7. I am satisfied that how we use the product does not represent a significant risk. What now?
Inform your employees of the findings of the Substance and Risk Assessments emphasising the importance of the control measures in place.

8. Is that it?
No. COSHH is an ongoing process. You must re-assess in the event of any changes that could significantly increase risk. Review remaining assessments at intervals of approximately 12 months.

9. What now?
If you have completed all of the above:
Sleep well! You are in compliance with these Regulations.
