| CONTROL OF
SUBSTANCES HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH (COSHH) |
 |
Under the
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
Regulations 2002, employers must carry out an
assessment of all substances that are, or may be,
a potential hazard to health, assess their
associated risk and record findings of such
assessments. |
PURPOSE
OF LEGISLATION: It is estimated by the HSE that each
year over 20,000 people die as a result of chronic (long
term) illness resulting from exposure to harmful
substances (compared with approximately 300 people killed
as a result of accidents).
Whilst a number of these tragic circumstances are caused
by exposure to harmful dust, asbestos and other sources
that are now more stringently controlled, there are still
many other substances which, if misused or used without
adequate controls, can cause chronic illness or acute
injury.
It is therefore essential that employers and employees
are aware of the dangers of the materials they use or
come into contact with at work. In this area, employers
have been prosecuted for not carrying out an assessment.
